  Why Here? Linda Lofton Hall Asks the Commission

  Linda Lofton Hall told Protect Lowndes County she will be 85 next month and has never lived anywhere but Lowndes County. She said she was told Project Red Clay started in January and did not hear about it until May, when neighbors, some of them good friends, began talking about selling their property. Her question for the Commission is why here, when there are plenty of empty spaces elsewhere in the county. She said she is not against the project being in the county, only against it going where it is now proposed.¹​

  Seven Wells and a School Bus

  Bradfield Evans has farmed cattle in Lowndes County for seventeen years, running the operation on seven wells with his wife's family at CK Cattle. He told Protect Lowndes County that U.S. Highway 80, the road his children ride to school every morning, runs directly through the land where Project Red Clay would be built, and that he could not imagine the construction traffic a hyperscale data center would add to that route.²​

  Protect Lowndes County asked seven residents living near the proposed site the same question, whether anyone from Cloverleaf or Lowndes County had sat down with them about the project, and all seven said no one had. The one open house Cloverleaf held, a come-and-go event at Hayneville Middle School with no formal presentation, is the only company contact any of them could point to.³​⁴​

  On August 2, 2026 the panel on The Voice of Alabama Politics gave Project Red Clay a segment, put its own title on it, Sacred Ground, and gave the price of the land as the reason this is the wrong location. The land here is cheap. U.S. Highway 80 carried the Selma to Montgomery march through this county, the Robert Gardner farm that sheltered the marchers at Campsite 3 sits about half a mile from the proposed site, and the stretch of highway running past it is named for Robert "Bob" Mants Jr.⁵​⁶​⁷​⁸​⁹​

  The petition published on this site on August 14 asks the Lowndes County Commission for four things, every one of them about disclosure: comply with the open-records request attorneys filed on July 27, name every entity and tenant, publish the water and energy projections behind the reported 1,500 megawatts from Alabama Power and 100,000 gallons a day from the Pintlala system, and put every document on one public dashboard.¹⁰​¹¹​¹²​¹³​

He told commissioners that things he had been told about the project turned out not to be true, said he did not understand how the data center could benefit a county that has no hotel and no restaurant, and closed by telling residents not to give up.   Chairman Charlie King committed three times not to vote for a 30-year tax abatement, then voted no on the motion to deny one, leaving it available. Alabama law lets an abatement granted before January 1, 2027 run up to 30 years; after that date the cap drops to 20.¹⁵​¹⁶​¹⁷​

  Wrightstown, Wisconsin voters rejected utility infrastructure for a Cloverleaf data center 1,033 to 151 in a non-binding advisory referendum on August 11, 2026. Lowndes County has held no equivalent vote on Project Red Clay.²²​²³​
